Chord Identifier is a visually aesthetic and musically accurate music theory companion designed with visual learners in mind. It listens to your real-time MIDI performance and uses a harmonic gravity engine to instantly identify and explain complex harmonies within their correct musical context. At its core, it is a chord identification tool that tells you what chord you're playing while being context aware of what scale and key you are in.
The application offers multiple layout options including DOT LAYOUT, traditional piano layout, and Guitar Fretboard layout. It includes scale mode with over 50+ scales available, chord history tracking, chord search functionality, and a waterfall MIDI player for importing and analyzing MIDI files. The native synthesizer features 2 oscillators, 1 noise oscillator, ADSR, filter with LFO and resonance, reverb and delay XY pads, drive pad for bitcrush and saturation, oscilloscope, and spectrogram.
Additional features include audio and MIDI recording capabilities that save as WAV audio and MIDI files, transpose options for semitones or octaves, metronome with tempo control and time signature selection, stickers for UI customization, quiz mode for ear training, and custom instrument creation with SFZ and SF2 file support. The app also supports sustain pedal, pitch wheel, and modulation wheel inputs.
The application works by establishing musical context through scale mode, where notes from the selected scale highlight in pastel green while notes outside the scale highlight bright red. After playing 30 notes, the app can auto-detect the scale based on your playing. The chord naming system prioritizes a humane approach using commonly accepted musician terminology rather than overly complicated mathematical names.
Benefits include making music learning and songwriting easier and faster through visual feedback and comprehensive chord analysis. Use cases include music education, ear training, songwriting assistance, performance analysis, and MIDI file study. The visual interface helps musicians understand chord structures and scale relationships in real-time.
The product targets musicians, music students, composers, and visual learners interested in music theory. It supports Windows and Mac platforms with Linux support coming soon. The application integrates with MIDI keyboards and supports custom instrument creation through WAV file imports and Soundfont compatibility.
